SITE TOUR A – Eraring Power Station

Eraring Power Station, located near Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, is Australia’s largest coal-fired power station and forms part of Origin Energy’s power generation fleet. Eraring’s Ash Dam is an integral component of the station’s operations and is a declared dam under NSW Dams Safety Regulations.

The proposed site tour will be split into two components.

  1. An Origin led tour of Eraring’s Ash Dam, which will provide an opportunity to discuss:
    • Capacity management
    • Ash recycling strategies
    • Closure and repurposing
  2. A review of Eraring’s Southern Embankment Stabilisation Project, which will provide an overview of:
    • Considered ground improvement and stabilisation methods.
    • The selected design solution, including site investigations, instrumentation, on-site trials, construction methodologies, QA/QC, etc.
    • The project site (led by the contractor, Menard).

Upon conclusion of the site tour, key stakeholders from Origin and Menard will join the attendees for a barbeque lunch at Menard’s site compound.

9:45am Complete sign-in and inductions at EPS front gate office
10:15am Load bus and travel up to Lake Macquarie Training Centre (LMTC, Cross St, Eraring – 2 min drive from front gate)
10:30am Undertake presentations on Eraring Ash Dam and Menard Embankment Stability Project (LMTC)
11:15am Split into two groups and load buses (enter EPS via Construction Rd entrance)
11:30am Commence EPS Ash Dam tour / Menard Embankment Stability Project tour
1:00pm Lunch on-site at Menard Site Office (Menard to provide BBQ – chance to discuss/network with visitors and site personnel)
2:00pm Sign-out from EPS (drop back visitors passes)
2:30pm Depart EPS
3:30pm Arrive Rydges Newcastle

LIDDELL POWER STATION

Ash Dam closure, final landform and future repurposing

The safe and responsible capping and repurposing of the Liddell Ash Dam is a key component of the Liddell Power Station closure program. The Liddell Power Station ceased operation in 2023 and already more than 50% of the 390-hectare ash dam has been capped as part of a progressive rehabilitation program. The Liddell Ash Dam site tour allows attendees to inspect the extensive closure activities whilst having the opportunity to discuss key project and land use challenges.
